Rome fines 211 tour bus drivers, withdraws 49 permits

(ANSA) - Rome, August 24 - Rome traffic wardens fined 211 tourism bus drivers and withdrew 49 short-term parking concessions in the past week in the capital city, as operators made inappropriate use of their permits and in some cases even supplied out-of-date ones. The law enforcement officers had run checks on some 1,500 tourist buses in the past week mainly in the historic centre of the city. Other areas that were involved were locations near the Vatican as well as the zone surrounding Rome's Villa Borghese park. The planned initiative was made public on August 17, when Rome traffic warden chief Carlo Buttarelli announced a series of blanket checks would be carried out on tourist buses to make sure driving regulations were being observed and that drivers weren't drunk.
