Ecuador's VP going to Milan, will meet Assange in London

(ANSA) - Quito, August 23 - Ecuadorean Vice President Lenin Moreno is arriving Thursday in Milan before setting off later in the week to meet WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at the country's embassy in London. Moreno, who is scheduled to meet with Ecuadorean immigrants in Italy, will travel to London Friday for the inauguration of the 2012 Paralympic Games, which start on August 29 and run through September 9. On his trip to London, Moreno is scheduled to meet the Wikileaks founder, who last week was granted political asylum by Ecuador, sparking a diplomatic row between the UK and the Central American country. Assange is wanted in Sweden on sexual assault charges, which he denies. Supporters say he risks being extradited to the US, where he is wanted for leaking a massive amount of secret diplomatic cables. Moreno, who lost the use of his legs after being injured in a robbery, is arriving in Milan to promote Plan Retorno, a government initiative aimed at encouraging Ecuadorean expatriates to return to their home country. According to government estimates, some 10% of Ecuador's population left the country between 1996 and 2000 in search of a better life. While traveling in Europe, Moreno will also be promoting "Operazione Manuela Espejo", a public plan to help people suffering from disabilities.
