Kostner says 'never had anything to do' with doping doc

(ANSA) - Rome, August 22 - Italy's world champion figure skater Carolina Kostner says she was not involved when her boyfriend, disgraced Olympian Alex Schwazer, met with a doctor who has been barred from sport for anti-doping violations. "I never had anything to do with Dr. Michele Ferrari," Kostner said in an interview in advance of the release Friday of newsmagazine Panorama, which will discuss her presence at a meeting in 2010 between her boyfriend Alex Schwarzer and the doctor. Days before Schwazer was to compete at the Olympics in London earlier this month, test results showed traces of the blood-boosting hormone EPO in his urine, excluding him from the 50km walk. Schwazer had won gold in the event at the 2008 Games in Beijing, something he says he achieved without performance-enhancing drugs. In Wednesday's interview, Kostner confirmed her presence at what she described as a casual meeting with trainers, but stated she was there only as Schwazer's girlfriend. According to Panorama, numerous athletes have been investigated in connection with Ferrari, an Italian physician and cycling coach who was banned for life in July 2012 by the U.S. Anti-Doping Authority. It accused Ferrari of numerous anti-doping violations including possession, trafficking, administration and assisting doping. Ferrari, who has also been linked to US seven-time-straight Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, has not formally contested that indictment.
