Giant popsicles keep zoo inhabitants refreshed in Rome

(ANSA) - Rome, August 22 - The staff at Rome's 'Bioparco di Roma' zoo are lending a refreshing hand to its inhabitants during the summer's brutal heat wave by feeding them specially-made popsicles, depending on their breed and preference. While the big carnivores like tigers, leopards and lions get giant meat-pops to gnaw, monkeys and other vegetarian-leaning zoo lodgers get the standard fruit-flavored treats sometimes filled with yogurt. "Around 50 bales of hay and alfalfa, 500 kg of vegetables and well over 300 kg of fresh fruit, mainly watermelons and cantaloupe, are consumed daily by the zoo's herbivores," said zoo director Paul Giuntarelli. Extra fountains and pools have been set up for refreshment and to "help fight boredom," Giuntarelli said.
