Italy fully backs new U.N. Syria peace envoy

(ANSA) - Rome, August 17 - Italy on Friday said it would give the newly appointed U.N. peace envoy for Syria its full backing to, adding that the only way of guaranteeing the local population a future of peace and stability was for a government of national unity without Assad to govern Syria. The United Nations on Friday appointed veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi as the new Syria peace envoy, following the resignation of his predecessor Kofi Annan two weeks ago. "Italy fully backs Brahimi in his mission, and hopes that the entire international community will approach the issue with the same sense of responsibility," Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi said. "It is desirable for the U.N. to have a heightened role in the future, more than has been possible to date as a result of the stalling of the Security Council." Terzi said the "search for a solution for Syria can no longer be delayed."
