ILVA steelworkers block roads in protest

(ANSA) - Taranto, August 16 - Labor unions in Taranto on Thursday were holding a two-hour strike and protest march that blocked major roads around the troubled ILVA steel mill that faces possible closure amid severe environmental and health violations. "We feel it is necessary to keep attention focused (on the plant) as we await concrete solutions to safeguard our health and the environment, in addition to keeping our jobs," said the FIM and UILM unions in a statement. In July a judge ordered Europe's largest steelworks to halt parts of its operations for endangering workers and nearby residents with fumes and dust particles since 1995. But the case has since bounced between courts as prosecutors, local citizens and the Green political party have fought to close the plant while the government and unions work to keep it open as it undergoes a 336-million euro cleanup.
