Sardinia, Tuscany have cleanest seas in Italy, report says

(ANSA) - Rome, August 14 - The coastlines of the Italian regions of Sardinia and Tuscany enjoy the cleanest seas in the nation, according to a report by environment group Legambiente. The findings, released on Tuesday, also identified 120 polluted areas on Italy's coastline, one every 62 kilometres. Legambiente said the southern Italian regions of Calabria and Campania, and north-western one of Liguria had the biggest number of polluted seaside locations. Legambiente researchers have travelled around the Italian coastline over the past two months to examine the situation closely and compile the annual Goletta Verde report. Much of the pollution that finds its way out to sea is transported by streams, rivers and canals, the report said. In fact, some 86% of polluted areas were found in locations close to water outlets into sea. The region of Calabria had 19 areas with unsatisfactory pollution levels, while Campania had 14. Liguria, well know for exclusive seaside resorts like Portofino, was found to have 15 polluted locations.
