Spread narrows in Italy after early fright

(ANSA) - Rome, August 13 - The spread between 10-year Italian bonds and the German benchmark closed at 447 basis points after climbing to 455 earlier on Monday. The spread, a barometer of Italy's borrowing costs and of investor faith in the country's ability to weather the eurozone crisis, closed at 450 points on Friday. The spread in Spain, another country whose bonds have been under added pressure in recent months, closed at 538. Stock markets were slightly down across Europe. The Milan bourse closed Monday at 14,532, losing 0.10%. London's FTSE 100 index was down 0.26% to close at 5,831.88. The CAC 40 index in Paris lost 0.27% to close at 3,426.41. The DAX index in Frankfurt lost almost half a percentage point to close at 6,910.
