Tuscany to help family of diver killed on Concordia job

Florence, February 4 - The Tuscany regional government said Tuesday that it is offering financial assistance to the family of a diver who was killed while working on the wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise liner. Israel Franco Moreno, 42, of Spain died Saturday while assisting with the salvage operation of the Costa Concordia, which killed 32 people when it crashed on rocks and sank in January 2012 off the Tuscan coast near Grossetto. Hundreds were injured in the shipwreck and since the disaster, efforts have been made to refloat the stricken liner so it can be towed away for salvage after it was set upright in September. An investigation is continuing but it is believed that Moreno, while trying to attack floatation tanks to the Concordia wreck, cut his leg and bled to death, despite efforts by his diving partner to get him to the surface and waiting paramedics. Moreno was airlifted to hospital but died of his wound and complications that resulted. Enrico Rossi, president of the Tuscan region, said assistance will be offered to the family from a regional solidarity fund for injured workers, which offers between 20,000 and 25,000 euros to their families. Rossi said he realized that money did not replace Moreno for his family. "A financial contribution is certainly not enough to compensate the families for the void left by their spouse; however, it is a sign of the region's solidarity," said Rossi. "I renew my sympathy to the family". The recovery and salvage operation has been underway since September 2013 when a massive parbuckling operation lifted the massive cruise ship off its side and into an upright position so it can be safely moved while still protecting the eco-system. Meanwhile, a trial involving multiple manslaughter charges continues against the ship's former captain Francesco Schettino, who is also accused of causing a shipwreck and leaving his ship before all passengers were evacuated.
