Church repaired where priest died trying to save Mary statue

(ANSA) - Rome, August 8 - Reconstruction began Wednesday on the earthquake-damaged church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria near the town of Modena where Father Ivan Martini died while trying to save a Mary statue. Martini was killed by falling debris when he entered the church in a fatal attempt to try and save a statue of the Madonna after an earthquake struck on May 29. Churchgoers of the village Rovereto di Novi removed most of the items found under the debris being removed by repair teams, including busts of St. Peter and St. Paul. Parishioners thanked the fire brigade teams that assisted them in the retrieval of the objects for "their work and courageous availability". The surrounding Emilia-Romagna region, which suffered two deadly earthquakes in May, is undergoing widespread reconstruction.
