Case at centre of 'VatiLeaks' furore

Results of pope's butler probe due Aug 13, says Vatican

(ANSA) - Vatican City, August 8 - The Holy See will publish the results of an investigation into how Pope Benedict XVI's butler came to be in possession of confidential Church documents on August 13, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said Wednesday. The butler, Paolo Gabriele, is suspected of aggravated theft. He was released from custody after two months in July and put under house arrest. Lombardi said the preparation of investigators findings had taken longer than expected after having previously said they would be presented August 6 or 7. Gabriele's case is related to the leaking of confidential Church documents to the media earlier this year. Benedict is said to be baffled by the case. "The pope has asked himself many times, with distress, for an explanation about the motive for the gesture of Paolo Gabriele, who he loved like a son," Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone told Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana in June. Gabriele is the only person to have been arrested in the so-called VatiLeaks case and his lawyer said he had acted alone. Vatican experts and the media, however, have speculated that he is a pawn of a power struggle between cardinals, with many suggesting Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone, the pope's right-hand man, is the intended target. The leaked documents included letters to the pope and Bertone from the Holy See's ambassador in Washington, Carlo Maria Vigano, who was deputy governor of Vatican City at the time they were written. The letters contained allegations of corruption in the management of Vatican City. The Vatican has blasted the media's coverage of the leaks affair and Bertone recently accused journalists of playing at being Dan Brown, saying they were guilty of "inventing tales and peddling legends".
