Soccer: Destro won over by Roma's ambition

(ANSA) - Rome, August 1 - Forward Mattia Destro said on Wednesday that he was excited to join AS Roma because the Serie A side have big ambitions. "I was convinced by the plans, by the desire of Roma, the fans, the team, and the coach," Destro, who had been linked to a move to Inter Milan and Serie A champions Juventus, told a press conference. The striker added that he was willing to play anywhere coach Zdenek Zeman asked him to. "I will give my best in training and then it will be the coach (who) makes decisions," said the 21-year-old. The deal to acquire Destro came only after lengthy wage negotiations that dragged on long after the two soccer clubs which owned his contract, Siena and Genoa, had agreed to sell him to Roma. Destro scored 12 goals for Siena last season and made Italy's preliminary squad for Euro 2012, but was not in final list of 23 who went to the tournament in Ukraine and Poland. The striker said he looked forward to playing alongside Roma captain and former Italy forward Francesco Totti, "because he is a fantastic player who puts you in a position to do well." But he refused to say much about the other teams who tried to sign him. "I am young and... I tried to choose the best solution," he said.
