Blames preparation for failure to make 100m freestyle final

Swimming: Magnini lashes out after Olympic failure

(ANSA) - London, July 31 - Filippo Magnini on Tuesday blasted the way Italy's swimmers were prepared for the Olympics after failing to reach the final of the 100 metres freestyle. Italy have not yet won a medal in the pool in London yet and Magnini's girlfriend Federica Pellegrini came only fifth in the 400m freestyle on Sunday, although she has the chance to make up for it by retaining her 200m freestyle title later on Tuesday. "I know I gave everything, but didn't make it, it's a shame for the Olympics," said Magnini, the 2005 and 2007 100m freestyle world champion. "It's a shame to throw away four years". Magnini, with a time of 49.18, placed sixth in his semi, just ahead of team member Luca Dotto, seventh with a time of 49.37. "I feel heavy because there was something wrong in the preparation...I only know that when I'm good, I'm going strong," said Magnini. Coach Claudio Rossetto brushed off Magnini's criticisms, suggesting the swimmer's comments came from a fiery temper. Still, he hinted that Magnini had himself to blame for Tuesday's outcome. "I do not regret the work done, but how it is finished. The remedies are obvious, Filippo did not arrive here in condition, although the swimmers tried their best," he said. "But for years the speed of (Italy's swimmers) with the same management has always been excellent". Rossetto, who is also working with Magnini's girlfriend and Olympic competitor Federica Pellegrini, dismissed suggestions the Pellegrini - who came fifth in the 400-metre freestyle Sunday - was distracted by the attention. Magnini suggested he hadn't been feeling 100% during training this year and should have told his coach before now. "Since January, I have been not well and this is also my fault that I did not make these feelings quite clear".
