Spending-review cuts blamed

Italy's provinces threaten not to reopen schools in Sept'

(ANSA) - Rome, July 23 - The leader of Italy's association of provincial governments said on Monday that many schools risked not reopening after the summer holidays in September because of government cuts. "We cannot guarantee that the school year will start" Giuseppe Castiglione said Monday. Premier Mario Monti's emergency government recently passed a decree to cut spending by 26 billion euros over the next three years and it said on Friday that will dissolve 64 of Italy's 107 provincial governments, assigning their functions to regional authorities, to save money.
