Bond pressure relents after spread hits 541 points

(ANSA) - Rome, July 25 - The pressure on Italy's bonds relented on Wednesday after the spread between 10-year BTPs and the German benchmark hit 541 points in early trading. The spread, a key indicator of investors' faith in Italy's ability to weather the eurozone crisis, came back down to 527 points with a yield of 6.52%. It closed at 537 points on Tuesday after fears about the possibility of Spain needing a bailout pushed up it to the levels of November, when mounting market and political pressure forced Italy's ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi to quit and economist Mario Monti came in to guide the country through crisis with an emergency technocrat government.
