Homeless from Italy's quakes drops below 9,000

(ANSA) - Bologna, July 23 - The number of homeless from the two devastating earthquakes that struck the northern Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Veneto in May has dropped below 9,000 as people are returning to their homes deemed safe, Italy's civil protection department said on Monday. Initially, the two quakes left 15,000 in temporary shelters, including camps and school gyms. The quakes killed 27, damaged or destroyed many historic buildings and are estimated to have caused over five billion euros in damage.
