Venice taxi collides with water bus beneath Rialto Bridge

Venice, September 18 - Another boat crash in Venice has occurred in the Grand Canal beneath the Rialto Bridge, a month after a German tourist was killed during a gondola ride, police said Wednesday. The latest accident took place Tuesday when a water bus collided with a taxi, causing damage to both vessels without injury. German Joachim Vogel, 50, who was riding with his family in a gondola, died of extensive head wounds last month when the gondola collided with a taxi. The force of the impact threw the entire family into the canal. Police say the gondolier at the helm tested positive for drugs, but their investigation still includes three water-bus pilots. Following the crash the city was in the process of implementing new safety measures around the historic Rialto Bridge, a narrow and busy bottleneck in Grand Canal traffic.
