Underwater police find Byzantine, Roman amphorae

(ANSA) – Genoa, September 16 – An underwater investigative unit of the Italian police have discovered a Byzantine amphora and what appears to be an ancient cannon about one mile off the coast of the northwestern Liguria region and 38 meters below sea level. The cannon is currently being used as a habitat by a conger eel, police said. Divers also found a portion of a large Roman amphora made of lead that dates back to a few centuries after the birth of Christ. It weighs several hundred tonnes and must have belonged to a large Roman ship, police said.
