Seven Italian films vie for foreign Oscar slot

Rome, September 16 - A vote will be made September 25 on seven Italian films contending for an Academy Award slot for Best Foreign Language Film, when a commission for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will make their judgments at the Italian national cinema industry association (ANICA) headquarters in Rome. Whether any of the Italian films make it onto the final Oscar ballot will be known January 16, when five nominees from around the world are announced. Italy's submissions include Paolo Sorrentino's "La Grande Bellezza" (The Great Beauty), a film about a culture critic immersed in the squalid world of Roman high society. "Miele" (Honey) is a debut film by director Valeria Golino about a 30-year-old woman whose clandestine job is to help terminally ill patients commit assisted suicide. "Razza Bastarda" (Bastard Race) tells the story of an impoverished, drug-dealing Romanian immigrant who tries to give his son a better life, and is written, directed and starring Italian actor Alessandro Gassman, son of Italian screen legend Vittorio Gassman. "Salvo" (Saved) is about a mafia henchman who kidnaps and falls in love with the blind sister of an assassination victim, directed by Antonio Piazza and Fabio Grassadonia. "Viaggio Sola" (I Travel Alone) follows a single career woman in her 40s with a dream job assessing luxury hotels, and is directed by Maria Sole Tognazzi. "Viva la Libertà" (Long Live Freedom) is a film in which an identical twin with a psychiatric disorder substitutes his politician brother, who has escaped his duties by fleeing to France, directed by Roberto Andò. Also in the running is the thriller-horror film "Midway - Tra la Vita e la Morta" (Midway - Between Life and Death) by Sicilian director John Real, about a group of friends who go for a weekend in the woods and encounter the strange presences that are suspended between death and afterlife. The 86th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2014. (photo: a still from Sorrentino's The Great Beauty)
