Garibaldi letters to 'Mille' chaplain found

Rinascimento hero tried to get Sicilian Catholic support

Garibaldi letters to 'Mille' chaplain found

Trapani, September 16 - Three letters by Risorgimento hero Giuseppe Garibaldi to the chaplain of the legendary 'Mille' expedition that won Sicily for the burgeoning state of Italy in 1860 have been found among a trove of documents left by a Sicilian historian and composer. The letters were written 6-10 years after the key event in Italy's unification. In them, Garibaldi urged Friar Giovanni Pantaleo to try to muster some support for unification - which led the pope to 'excommunicate' the State born in 1871 - among Catholic Church figures in Sicily.
