Pope Francis says Catholics should be politically active

Vatican City, September 16 - Pope Francis told Catholics on Monday not to shy away from the political arena. The Argentine pontiff said good citizens could not be uninterested in politics, especially if they are Christians. "A good Catholic gets involved in politics," Francis said in his homily during Mass at Saint Martha's House, the Vatican residence where he has stayed since being elected pope in March, eschewing the luxurious trappings of the papal apartments in favor of mingling with staff and visitors. He said this involvement should come via the presentation of "ideas and suggestion" and, above all, prayer. Francis also said that "humility and love for the people" were indispensable characteristics for political leaders.
