Raising of Concordia becomes 'visible'

Giglio Island, September 16 - The operation to lift the wrecked Costa Concordia cruise ship upright became visible to the naked eye around two hours after it began at 9:00 local time on Monday. It was possible to distinguish a one-metre-thick section that was previous submerged and was darker than the part that remained out of water. The first phase of the so-called parbuckling operation, which will take around 12 hours, involves lifting the Concordia off the rock shelf it has been lying on since it capsized in January 2012 in a disaster that claimed 32 lives.
