Immigrants to be respected and reciprocate in Italy

Interior minister says breaking country's laws 'intolerable'

Immigrants to be respected and reciprocate in Italy

Rome, September 13 - Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said on Friday that while immigrants' rights should be respected, they should reciprocate with the same respect for Italian law. "We respect the rights of immigrants, but they must respect our law," Alfano, the People of Freedom (PdL) party No. 2, said following a meeting of European interior ministers in Rome. "It will no longer be tolerated that migrants see their rights respected but they do not do the same with our laws," Alfano said. Alfano referred to an incident "some days ago" when immigrant's being held in an identification and expulsion centre (CIE) in Milan damaged the structure.
