IMF urges Italy to uphold reforms, budget discipline

New York, September 12 - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday urged Italy to keep on the reforms path the eurozone's third-largest economy has embarked upon and to maintain budget discipline in order to emerge from recession and the euro crisis. "It's important Italy maintains the progress already made", IMF spokesman Gerry Rice said, commenting on the risks tied to the current political instability gripping the nation. A Senate panel will vote Wednesday night on stripping ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi of his seat in the Upper House because of a tax-fraud conviction. Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party says it will scupper its government alliance with the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) if the PD panel members vote to recommend enforcing the ban.
