Senate panel to vote on Berlusconi ban Wednesday night

PdL says will topple govt if PD sticks to ejection stance

Senate panel to vote on Berlusconi ban Wednesday night

Rome, September 12 - A Senate panel will vote Wednesday night on stripping ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi of his seat in the upper house because of a tax-fraud conviction, the panel chief said Thursday. Dario Stéfano said the voting would start at 20:30 on Wednesday. Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party says it will scupper its government alliance with the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) if the PD panel members vote to recommend enforcing the ban. A Senate floor vote is needed to ratify the ban but the PdL says it won't come to that unless the PD changes its mind regarding the panel vote, claiming the relevant anti-corruption law is against the Italian Constitution.
