Italian left party adds amendment to political funding decree

Measure would stop Berlusconi from funding PdL

Rome, September 11 - Italy's left-wing SEL party on Wednesday filed an amendment to a decree on party funding that would prevent ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi from funding the party he founded. The amendment bans anyone who has received a definitive conviction for corruption, bribery or tax fraud from financing any political parties or movements. If passed, the norm would prevent Berlusconi, who received a definitive conviction for tax fraud in August, from giving money to his center-right People of Freedom (PdL) party or any other political organization or candidate list. SEL, led by Puglia Governor Nichi Vendola, is a political ally of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD). Italy's left-right coalition government led by the PD's Enrico Letta is already deeply strained by political differences over what the conviction means for Berlusconi's political future.
