Italy nears clean bill of health on bird flu

Brussels, September 11 - Italy is nearing a clean bill of health from the European Union with regards to a outbreak of bird flu. On Wednesday, qualified sources in Brussels told ANSA that if no additional cases are reported this month, Italy will no longer be obliged to implement extraordinary prevention measures required under EU regulations. Hundreds of thousands of fowl have been culled at affected farms in northern Italy since an outbreak was first spotted last month. The outbreaks have not posed any human risk, health authorities have said.
