PdL ministers plot government's future

Rome, September 10 - Heavyweights in the Italian cabinet who belong to ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party called an 11th-hour summit Tuesday over the looming crisis in the Senate. Ministers at the meeting included Angelino Alfano, deputy premier and PdL secretary; Renato Brunetta, leader of the PdL in the House; Constitutional Reform Minister Gaetano Quagliariello; Infrastructure Minister Maurizio Lupi; and Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin. The PdL, which shares government power with the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), have threatened to pull out of their alliance and topple the government over a looming Senate panel vote. The PdL says it will take that drastic step if the PD votes Tuesday night to reject its petitions designed at postponing a decision on whether Berlusconi should be stripped of his Senate seat over a tax fraud conviction.
