President pleads for 'national coexistence' as crisis looms

(see related) Rome, September 10 - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano called on Italians to strengthen their sense of coexistence as a government crisis looms over ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's political fate. "If we don't hold together and consolidate these pillars of our national coexistence, everything is at risk, everything could be at risk," he said at a reception for delegates from the city of Barletta honoring the 70th anniversary of the rebellion against the Nazi occupation. A Senate panel is currently deliberating whether to ratify a ban from office for Berlusconi, definitively convicted in the supreme Cassation Court last month for tax fraud. His party, the center-right People of Freedom, has vowed to topple the coalition left-right government if the panel goes ahead with proceedings without heeding its motions to delay them.
