International bike-theft ring uncovered in Italy

Verona, September 10 - Police in Verona have uncovered a bicycle-theft ring that allegedly shipped its loot to Morocco, investigators said on Tuesday. The police had been investigating a rising epidemic of bicycle thefts in Verona and other Italian cities, when last July they surprised a would-be thief in front of the city's downtown Roman amphitheatre. That confrontation led to a series of leads police followed through surveillance that enabled investigators to identify a garage where a Moroccan immigrant had parked a truck loaded with dismantled and packaged bicycles. Police seized 30 bicycles, all robbed from German tourists in Lake Garda, which investigators say the Moroccan man was ready to truck through France and Spain with Morocco as the final destination. The Moroccan man was arrested for receiving stolen goods. Investigators are continuing their investigation to better understand the total number of bicycles shipped off to Morocco, which they suspect may be considerable.
