Napolitano hopes govt crisis will be averted

Rome, September 5 - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano hopes a government crisis over ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's possible ejection from the Senate after a tax-fraud conviction will be averted, presidential sources said Thursday. The government led by the centre-left Democratic Party's (PD) Enrico Letta has had the president's unwavering support, they said. The PD has said it will vote next week to enforce a ban mandated by Berlusconi's August 1 conviction for tax fraud at his media empire. Berlusconi and his People of Freedom (PdL) Party says the PD's stance on enforcing the law, which it says is unconstitutional, will force it to sink the unprecedented left-right coalition four months after its inception following a two-month post-election stalemate.
