Ex-premier 'has voiced support for executive'

Napolitano trusts Berlusconi not to sink govt

Rome, September 5 - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano "trusts" Silvio Berlusconi not to sink Italy's unprecedented left-right government between the three-time premier's People of Freedom (PdL) Party and the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), presidential sources said Thursday. Napolitano is not weighing what to do in the event of a government crisis because Berlusconi has stated he will continue to back the executive led by the PD's Enrico Letta, they said. A crisis would bring "very grave risks," they said. Berlusconi is facing ejection from the Senate if the PD votes, as it has said it will, to enforce a ban from a four-year conviction for tax fraud at the media magnate's Mediaset group, the magnate-turned-politician's first definitive conviction in 20 years of legal battles against magistrates he says are left-wing. Berlusconi and the PdL are seeking to pin the blame for scuppering the government on the PD because of its insistence on enforcing the ban.
