Pozzuoli (Naples), September 4 - Firefighting aircraft as well as ground crews were brought in Wednesday to fight one major fire raging in the area near Naples and another that threatened a protected area at Mount Vesuvius. At the same time, authorities say they charged one person with arson in connection with a major blaze that threatened parts of Sardinia earlier in the summer. Mirko Morle, 24, of Golfo Aranci was charged with a fire that began in June and destroyed more than 500 hectares of land on Sardinia. Investigators said they are still looking for other people involved in the crime. Meanwhile firefighters, forest rangers, and volunteers have been supported by three Canadair firefighting aircraft as they battle a huge fire in the area of Monte Gauro in a mountainous area near Pozzuoli. Causes are not known but authorities have not ruled out arson. Some farms and homes are at risk as well as a high-voltage electrical network. Fire is threatening protected areas near Vesuvius National Park, and near Torre del Greco, with smoke from the blaze visible for several kilometres around. Smoke is even affecting visibility on the highway linking Naples and Salerno.
