Over 50,000 at pope's first gen audience after summer break

Vatican City, September 4 - The Vatican said Wednesday that over 50,000 people were in St Peter's Square for Pope Francis's general audience, the first after the weekly meetings were suspended in July and August for a summer break. The Vatican stressed that this was a conservative estimate as it only accounted for people with tickets for the audience, while many more without tickets were sure to attend. There was huge excitement in the crowd as Francis toured the square in an open-top jeep at the start of the audience, blessing the faithful and stopping to kiss and caress children.
