Ex-Lotta Continua militant justifies violence in Susa Valley

'Every action' legitimate against TAV, activist tells radio

Turin, September 3 - An ex-militant of the 1970's radical leftwing group Lotta Continua (Continuous Struggle) told radio listeners on Tuesday that ''every action'' is legitimate in the fight to prevent high speed TAV rail from being built in the Susa Valley, between Lyons and Turin. ''If someone puts your life in danger, all you can do is fight to the bitter end and sabotage the work. Every action is legitimate,'' the writer and activist Erri De Luca told Radio 24 on a programme called Zanzara (Mosquito). To a question about the use of violence against police by militant protesters, De Luca replied,''Wounded police? For now I think the losers are those of the valley who see their territory raped and militarily occupied''. Anti-TAV activists have organized a series of protests against the high-speed rail link throughout Italy over the last few years, some of which included violent clashes with police, vandalism, threats and disruption of highway traffic. The motorway in Piedmont's Susa Valley was blocked in early August following the arrest of three protesters and the detention of 17 others. Some of the 'No TAV' activists sprinkled hundreds of nails on the motorway and four vehicles suffered punctures. Senator Stefano Esposito, known for his support for the controversial TAV line, received a third threatening letter in early August. In August, a group of activists were put under investigation for suspected terrorism offences in relation to protests at TAV construction sites in mid-July. Several members of the anti-TAV movement - who oppose the cost and environmental damage of the railway between Lyon and Turin - were given prison terms for 2010 protests. Supporters of the link maintain that it will save money and decrease pollution by reducing highway transportation.
