Italy told to cut political interference in using EU funds

Clear strategies demanded for structural funds

Brussels, September 2 - Italy must find a way to reduce political interference in the use of European Union structural funds, the EU said in a document obtained Monday by ANSA. Otherwise, political meddling will lead to "distortions" in administrative efforts to make the best use of funds, according to the documents related to the Structural Fund programs for 2014-2020. The Structural Fund is a financial tool used to apply EU regional policies in member countries, particularly aimed at reducing regional disparities. Last month, European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn told ANSA that Italy should focus "on a few, clear priorities" when investing EU funding. Brussels is awaiting for Italy's draft partnership agreement on planning development resources and wants "to ensure a significant concentration of available resources on a few, clear priorities," said the commissioner. Italy is expected by September 30 to give the EC a draft including strategies to allocate European structural funds from the EU multiannual budget for 2014-2020.
