Ministers' double pay ends

Part of cost-cutting to appease public anger

Ministers' double pay ends

Rome, August 30 - Italian ministers' traditional double pay has been banned, the state accountants' office said Friday. Ministers must get by on their ministerial pay, without adding their salaries as MPs or from other jobs, it said. The measure, part of efforts to cut political costs amid public anger after a wave of scandals, is back-dated to become effective July 20, the office said.
