Medical staff under investigation for death of man sent away

Lecce, August 28 - Six doctors and nurses from three different medical centers in the southern region of Puglia were placed under investigation Wednesday for the death of a man who was refused treatment and sent away by staff from all of the hospitals. Giorgio Lanzilao, 68, was found collapsed in a field by his son with a spot on his finger and abrasions on his arm on August 22 near their home in the town of Ortelle. Lanzilao was taken to the Tricase, Poggiardo and Scorrano hospitals, but turned away from each one before being admitted to the Panico clinic in the town of Tricase seven hours later. He died shortly after. An autopsy to ascertain the cause of death is being carried out Wednesday. The six people under investigation could face charges of involuntary manslaughter.
