Berlusconi legal team fights to keep Senate seat

Rome, August 28 - Lawyers for ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi presented legal opinions Wednesday supporting their argument that he should be allowed to keep his Senate seat despite his conviction earlier this month for tax fraud. The opinions, including some constitutional arguments, were presented to a committee involved in the Senate's vote on the question of whether to strip Berlusconi of his seat following a high-court ruling that upheld his first-ever binding conviction in a criminal court. The Senate, where the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) holds a narrow majority, will decide next month whether to ratify stripping Berlusconi of his Senate seat. Berlusconi argues that stripping him of his seat is unconstitutional since its basis is a new anti-corruption law that kicked in only after his August 1 conviction.
