Rain, lightening this week trigger civil protection alert

Bad weather bringing hail, thunder to Italy

Rome, August 26 - The month of August is likely to close with a bang as fierce thunderstorms and lightening are forecast this week, meteorologists warned Monday. Lightening, thunder, heavy winds and possibly hail are expected in many areas, while heavy rain threatens the central and southern parts of the country on Tuesday, forecasters said. And that has ignited an alert from civil protection agencies, warning people to be extra cautious from Lazio province, where the capital city of Rome is located, to Abruzzo, Molise, Campania and down to northern Puglia and Basilicata. Although it is expected that Tuesday will see the most inclement weather, disturbances will likely continue until at least Thursday, forecasters said. The weather instability will also include brief flashes of sunny, hot summer-type conditions, especially in costal areas, forecasters said. As the weekend begins, conditions should improve with normal late-summer temperatures in most parts of the country. But expect more instability again on Sunday with clouds and thunderstorms across southern regions of Campania, Basilicata and Calabria, and between Lazio and Abruzzo.
