Naples multicultural, not racist, says mayor

Naples, August 26 - Reports of two shootings of immigrants in Naples must be investigated quickly, the mayor said Monday. Luigi de Magistris said the attacks, reported by immigration support network ''febbraio 3'' also serve as a reminder that racism and intolerance exist, although they are not acceptable. ''It never hurts to raise awareness and attention to what may...if not firmly denounced, if not stigmatized in a clear and strong (message)''...gather strength, said de Magistris. The febbraio 3 group said that in separate and apparently random incidents in Naples, two immigrant men were shot at, with one sustaining a leg wound. The mayor also defended his city, saying that historically Naples has welcomed new arrivals from sea ports around the world. But it's easy to stir up anger and violence when many are suffering, he added. ''Even in these difficult times, with the extreme poverty of our city, we must avoid absolutely the war between the poor and reach out to those in need,'' said de Magistris. ''We must always think about who is in trouble,'' particularly new immigrants who have fled their homelands for Italy, he added. Photo: Naples mayor, Luigi de Magistris
