Ex-Italian president Ciampi undergoes hip surgery

Bolzano, August 22 - Former Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was hospitalized in the Santa Maria private clinic in the northeastern Italian city of Bolzano, a note from the clinic's medical director said on Thursday. The 92-year-old former head of state underwent hip-replacement surgery and is reported to be in good condition. He is spending a period of rest and recovery in the town of Siusi, near the Italian border with Autstria. Ciampi served as president of Italy from 1999 to 2006, and as premier from 1993 to 1994.
