Italian bond spread soars to 533 points, Milan loses 3%

(ANSA) - Rome, July 24 - The spread between 10-year Italian bonds and the German benchmark soared to 533 points on Tuesday and the Milan stock exchange's FTSE Mib index lost 3.03% on Monday amid growing investor unease about the threat of the eurozone debt crisis deteriorating. The yield spread is a barometer of Italy's borrowing costs and an indicator of market confidence in the country's ability to weather the eurozone crisis. It had not been so high since November, when Silvio Berlusconi quit as premier to make way for Mario Monti's emergency government of non-political technocrats.
