Heavy rainstorms in Rome and Florence

Bad weather sweeps central Italy

Rome, August 20 - Central Italy was hit by rainstorms on Monday night and Tuesday. Torrential rainstorms struck Rome where streets in the northern part of the capital were closed to traffic due to flooding and fallen trees. Heavy storms also hit Tuscany overnight, in particular Florence where lightning struck trees around the pediatric Meyer hospital, starting a small blaze which was immediately extinguished by fire police. Heavy rainstorms were also reported across the island of Sardinia, a major tourist area in August, with bad weather forecast until Friday. Rainstorms are expected on Wednesday and Thursday in the island, meteorologist Giovanni Brescia told ANSA, "especially in the afternoon". Rainstorms were also expected to hit the southern Campania region later on Tuesday.
