Council of Europe sounds alarm on child labour

Strasbourg, August 20 - Child labour is on the rise in Europe due to the economic crisis, the Council of Europe warned on Tuesday. "In most cases, governments are aware of the problem but few are ready to confront it," said the Council's Human Rights Commissioner Nils Muiznieks. The commissioner in particular denounced the lack of data on the phenomenon and said the figures available were "worrying". According to international non-governmental organization Save the Children, 5.2% of minors under 16 work in Italy.
