Former premier looks set to stand in 2013 elections

Berlusconi's party to return to old name, Forza Italia

(ANSA) - Rome, July 16 - Former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi has said his centre-right People of Freedom (PdL) party is going to revert to its old name, Forza Italia. Berlusconi, who announced the news in an interview published in Monday's edition of German newspaper Bild, is expected to "return to the field" of politics after PdL Secretary Angelino Alfano said the 75-year-old media magnate intends to stand at next year's general elections. Three-time premier Berlusconi said he would not stand again after he resigned from the helm of government in November and was replaced by Premier Mario Monti and his emergency administration of non-political technocrats. Forza Italia merged with the right-wing National Alliance (AN) in 2009 to become the PdL. AN's former chief Gianfranco Fini split with Berlusconi in 2010 and formed his own party, Future and Liberty (FLI), although many former AN members remain in the PdL.
