Cagliari, August 14 - More fires were reported Wednesday in central Sardinia one week after flames destroyed thousands of hectares of vegetation. Four helicopters and two Canadair firefighting aircraft were used to battle blazes near Siniscola, where flames are burning dangerously close to an industrial area. Meanwhile, near Iglesias, fires are consuming forest and bush area. Fires, fuelled by the strong and warm northeast winds, have drawn out volunteer firefighting crews and civil protection workers. Fierce forest fires battled last week on Sardinia destroyed as much as 8,000 hectares of woods and pasture lands, and forced evacuations in the community of Laconi.
