Mayor pushing ahead with pedestrian-friendly overhaul

Roman Forum road off-limits to cars during Ferragosto

Rome, August 13 - The road leading through the Roman Forum to the Colosseum will be completely off-limits to cars for four days starting on the Ferragosto holiday Thursday, Rome Mayor Ignazio Marino declared Tuesday. The road, which was built by Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, is currently undergoing a gradual process of being made exclusive to pedestrians, cyclists and public vehicles, as part of an overhaul launched by Marino earlier this month. Ferragosto, on April 15, is the Feast of the Assumption, a national holiday when virtually everything in the country shuts down. It was first established in 18 BCE to celebrate the harvest by the emperor Augustus, who oversaw the final building stages of the Forum.
