Italy must prioritize EU funds, warns EU commissioner

Brussels, August 13 - Italy should focus "on a few, clear priorities" when investing EU funding, European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn told ANSA on Tuesday. "Distribution of EU funds with a scattergun approach must end," the commissioner warned. Brussels is awaiting in the fall Italy's draft partnership agreement on planning development resources and wants "to ensure a significant concentration of available resources on a few, clear priorities," said the commissioner. Italy is expected to hand over to the European Commission on September 30 a draft including strategies to allocate European structural funds from the EU multiannual budget for 2014-2020. "In order to really make a difference on the economic development of the country, it is necessary to focus on a limited number of priorities" to create long-lasting employment, support regions and spur growth, the commissioner said.
