Italy extends public sector pay freeze through 2014

Rome, August 8 - The Italian government on Thursday extended the duration of a current pay freeze applied on public sector employees through to the end of 2014, citing the economic outlook and the exceptional conditions Italy's public finance are facing. The measures blocking automatic pay rises as well as suspending union negotiations for collective contract-payment increases were introduced at a cabinet meeting held in Rome, according to a statement. The adoption of these measures were made necessary by the current economic-financial outlook the country is facing that obliges action to be taken not only for this year but also for 2013, the statement said. The exceptional conditions that currently exist justify the extension through the end of 2014 of a series measures, said the statement.
